There are 3 basic types of hardwood floors today:

Solid: This is normally 3/4" thick solid piece of wood from top to bottom. Solid Hardwood can be prefinished or unfinished. Prefinished is normally a better option as the finish can be made stronger at the factory than on sight. These can be refinished 3-4 times in most cases.

Engineered: Hardwood from top to bottom that is made in layers that are bonded together in opposing directions. Mannington engineered floors are less likely to warp with seasonal changes. The surface is normally stronger and has less stress cracks. These can also be refinished 1-4 times depending on the top wearable surface.

Composite: This is when they place hardwood only on the wearable surface and maybe the bottom. The backing and core material may be made up of any type of composite material. These can not be refinished in most cases.

Benefits of Hardwood Floors

Whether your home is traditional or contemporary, brand new or centuries old, wood floors offer endless design possibilities to fit your personal style. In addition to their natural beauty, wood floors are crafted to stand up to all phases of life.

The typical life span of a wood floor can exceed 100 years, making it a tremendous value. When they start to lose their luster, some hardwood floors can easily be sanded and refinished multiple times to restore their beauty. As an alternative, if you do not wish to change the color, a screen and recoat process can refresh the luster of the floor.

While hardwood floors are long-lasting, they can be prone to indentation because it’s a natural product, whereas something like Laminate or Adura will preform better with dents.

Mannington hardwood floors have ScratchResist® which can help the floor resist scratching. They combined this with Mannington’s high performance coating with Aluminum Oxide to help keep floors looking newer longer.

Hardwood doesn’t harbor mold, dust, or animal dander, which makes it better for homes of allergy sufferers and a breeze to clean.

The best part is that it is known to increase a home’s value. According to a Quantitative Evaluation of Real Estate Professionals, homes with wood floors sell faster and for more money than homes without them. The study also found that many real estate agents indicate identical homes with wood floors can sell for up to 10% more. Other studied indicate that you can gain 140% to 150% of the investment of your hardwood flooring purchase. So if you are selling in the future it is worth looking at hardwood floors as an easy investment in your home's resale.

Are Wood Floors
Easy To Install?

Yes and no. Yes, if you know the basics of using a saw and have done some home improvements in the past. No if you have not. However many clients use professional installation services to ensure a good installation.

SUBFLOORING: To prepare for a flooring installation, any furniture or appliances will need to be removed from the area. Then, the current flooring and trim will be removed, along with any hardware that's present. This can go over the top of some flat level floors. However, In some cases, the subfloor may also require preparation, if it is damaged or uneven.  If your subfloor is concrete, it needs to be clean and dry to apply new flooring and sealed in some cases. Any holes or cracks present need to be repaired, as well as any high spots or bumps. If the subfloor is worn, a coat of leveler may be necessary.

If you’re installing the flooring yourself, be sure to seek and follow the installation instructions. Each installation may have slight differences and a professional can help guide you through this process.

What Hardwood Floors Are Not?

Hardwood floors are not indestructible. They do require that you maintain them and have a good home environment to maintain the look of the wood for many years. While any kind of flooring is susceptible to scratches, what can look like scratches in hardwood are in the finish, not the wood itself. Unlike tile or vinyl, all it takes is a simple color marker touch-up and the scratches may disappear. Hardwood floors do not clean themselves. I know you are disappointed, but your floors will get dirty, no matter what type of floor you install! The dirt and dust we see on wood floors is the same amount that would collect on other flooring types. Carpet is a flooring option that can retain heat and help insulate your home, but hardwood floors can do the something similar. Choose rich, dark shades of wood paired with the perfect accent rug can create a cozy space that will look and feel warmer.
